The Humbleness of Christ

MY daily reflection and prayer: Saturday, September 27, 2014

Dear all my friends,

Here is the Gospel for us today, according to St. Luke 9:43b-45.

While they were all amazed at his every deed, Jesus said to his disciples, “Pay attention to what I am telling you. The Son of Man is to be handed over to men.”

But they did not understand this saying; its meaning was hidden from them so that they should not understand it, and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

And this is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You Lord Jesus Christ.

What can we learn from the Gospel today?

The second part of the texts of the Gospel proclaimed to us today is interesting to me, especially the last sentence. “They were afraid to ask him about this saying.” They do not understand what Jesus saying, but they are afraid to ask Him about it: why? Why are they afraid to ask Him, although they do not understand?

In fact it represents our character. So many times we do not understand of something but we are afraid to ask about it. And this is our arrogance! Asking something to other needs the humility of heart. We have no it.

Jesus tells to His disciples about His suffering and crucifixion. “The Son of Man is to be handed over to men.” Jesus teaches on His suffering, betrayal, rejection and crucifixion following the miracles He has done. They are all amazed at His every miracles but in the contrary they are afraid of bearing the suffering and cross.

Surely, by reading the Gospel we know that the miracles of Jesus reveal the awesome power and majesty of God and His blessing for us, especially towards the lowly and humble of heart. But with the miracles Jesus also gives a prophetic warning to us. We can be no share in God’s glory without bearing the cross.

In Perpetual Adoration of the Eucharist, we adore Jesus who teaches us concerning His own betrayal and crucifixion but it does not make any sense to us because it does not fit our understanding of the Messiah. So while worshipping Him, we ask Him that we understand that the way to victory over sin and death must be through the cross and resurrection of Christ.

Let’s pray: Lord Jesus Christ, by Your suffering and death on the cross You have redeemed us and the world and so revealed Your glory and triumph over sin and death for the sake of our salvation. May we never fail to see Your glory and victory in the suffering and cross. Help us to conform our lives to Your will and to follow in Your way of love and holiness by bearing our cross faithfully, now and forever. Amen.
