Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time
Dear my friends,
Here is the Gospel for us today according to Matthew 12:38-42
Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to him, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign; but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale, so will the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nin’eveh will arise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. The queen of the South will arise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.
This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
THE Gospel tells us that some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” They pressed him to give proof for his claims to be the Messiah sent from God.
Jesus replied them that they need no further evidence from heaven than his own person. They just had to accept him and to trust in him as the Ninevites recognized God’s warning when Jonah spoke to them, and they repented. Jesus was greater than Jonah.
But unfortunately they were not accept the signs right before their eyes. They rejected Jesus as God’s Anointed One. Jesus Christ confirmed his message with many miracles in preparation for the greatest sign of all his resurrection on the third day but they did not believe in him.
In the Perpetual Adoration of the Eucharist we do not only accept Jesus Christ but also trust in him. We worship the Lord Jesus Christ who offers us freedom from sin and ignorance. We learn to be humble ourselves before him and submit our heart and mind to his will for our lives.
Let’s pray: Lord Jesus Christ, you are the source of all wisdom, goodness, truth, and knowledge. Fill us with your wisdom and free our heart from all that would hinder your loving action in our life now and forever. Amen.
