MY daily reflection and prayer: Monday, November 24, 2014

Dear my friends, Here is the Gospel for us today according to St. Luke 21:1-4.

When Jesus looked up he saw some wealthy people putting their offerings into the treasury and he noticed a poor widow putting in two small coins. He said, “I tell you truly, this poor widow put in more than all the rest; for those others have all made offerings from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood.”

This the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You Lord Jesus Christ.

Today, we meet Jesus who praises a poor widow who offers the smallest of coins in contrast with the rich who gives greater sums. How can she in poverty give offering more than the rich who has ample means? This is Jesus’ answer, and it’s very simple: love is more precious than gold or wealth!

Jesus wants to teach us that real giving must come from our hearts. A gift given out of love, with a spirit of generosity and sacrifice, is precious in the eyes of the Lord.

The amount of the gift doesn’t matter as much as the cost to the giver. The poor widow is able to have kept one of her coins, but instead she recklessly gives away all she has! So, Jesus praises her because she gives everything she has, that is her whole living.

In Perpetual Adoration of the Eucharist, we try to offer to Jesus Christ our love which may look very small and not worth much. There, we put all we have at the Lord’s disposal, no matter how insignificant it may seem. We just believe that God can do with it and with us what is beyond our reckoning. So, let’s not hesitate to give out of love and gratitude for what God has already given to us.

Let’s pray: Lord Jesus Christ, You have loved us first and You love us unconditionally. All that we have comes from You only. May we give freely and generously in gratitude for all that You have given to us. Take our lives and all that we possess, our gifts, talents, time and resources. Please, use them as You see fit for Your glory, now and forever. Amen.
