MY  daily reflection and prayer. Tuesday, September 2, 2014

“And amazement came upon all, and they spoke together, one with another, saying: What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out” (Luke 4:36).

This is our reading today, taken from the gospel according to St. Luke 4:31-37. Let’s read it completely: Jesus went down to Capernaum, a town of Galilee. He taught them on the Sabbath, and they were astonished at his teaching because he spoke with authority.

In the synagogue there was a man with the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out in a loud voice, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God!”

Jesus rebuked him and said, “Be quiet! Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down in front of them and came out of him without doing him any harm. They were all amazed and said to one another, “What is there about his word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” And news of him spread everywhere in the surrounding region.
This is the Gospel of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

What can we contemplate it? Let’s note that twice the reading states about Jesus’ authority and power. The first is a description. The second is a reaction. First of all, St. Luke describes that people of Capernaum were astonished at his teaching because he spoke with authority. Then, he proclaims the reaction of the people saying, “What is there about his word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.”

So, let’s now contemplate the authority and the power of Jesus. Why is Jesus so authoritative and powerful? The answer is clear, yes, because He is the Son of the living God. It’s why He speaks and teaches with authority and power.

Jesus speaks the word of God as no one has spoken it before. Not like Jews Rabbis who taught by quoting from other authorities, nor as the prophets spoke with delegated authority from God; Jesus never needed anybody to get authorities to back his teaching up.

Jesus Himself is the authority and the power because He was the Word of God made flesh. So, when Jesus Christ speaks, God Himself speaks. It’s why, when Jesus Christ commands even the demons obeys.

Jesus has all authority and power to heal every sickness and expel every demonic power because He is the Son of the living God. He is the active Word of God the Father. Since He is the living and active Word of God the Father, by whom all things exist, and in whom all things are, in his own person Jesus crushes the demonic power and closes the profane mouth of impure demons.

Jesus Christ is the truth and life. He has authority and power to set us free from every evil, sin and oppression. He has also authority and power to heal our body, mind, and spirit.

Now, if the demons are able to recognize the authority and power of Jesus Christ, the Lord, the Son of the living God, we should more recognize and believe in His authority and power through the gospel as the good news and entrust our life to the Lord Jesus Christ!

In Perpetual Adoration of the Eucharist, Jesus Christ speaks with His life-giving Word to us each time and every day. So,
we may walk in the freedom of His love and truth. Let’s approach the Word of God made flesh that dwells among us with meekness and humility. Let’s worship Him with eagerness so that we are able to do everything He wants. May we be in a much better position to learn what God wants to teach us through Perpetual Adoration.

Let’s pray: Lord Jesus Christ, You have authority and power to purify our heart. You are the Word of everlasting life. Teach us to believe in You that we never doubt Your saving love and mercy. May Your authority and power heals, restores, and frees us from every evil, sin and oppression, forever and ever. Amen.
