Feast of Assumption of the Virgin Mary

“For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed” (Luke 1:48).

Today, Indonesian Catholic Church has appointed the day as the Feast of Assumption of the Virgin Mary . According to the universal Liturgical Calendarium, the feast would be hold on Friday, August 15th 2014.

Let’s contemplate the improtant verse of the Gospel according to St. Luke as I quote it above. “For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed” (Luke 1:48).

That is the prayer of St. Virgin Mary: “all generations will call me blessed..”. Why? First, God who is mighty has done great things for her, and holy is His name. Second, His mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation. Third, God has shown strength with His arm, He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts, He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted those of low degree; He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away.

In the feast of the assumption of Virgin Mary into heaven, God also calls us to be blessed. Who are all generations? Yes, we are. Together with Mother Mary, God’s mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation.

How strong is our hope in the promises of God? According to the Catholic Church, Mother Mary is a model of faith and hope for us. As St. Paul meditated, Mother Mary is among “the first-fruits” of “all those who belong to Jesus” and who share in his triumph (1 Corinthians 15:20-24). The assumption fo the Virgin Mary into heaven is seen as a sign to all believing Christians of the promise Jesus made that we would be received into paradise as well.

Let’s pray each other that what enabled Mary to grow in faith and to persevere in hope in the face of obstacles and trials because of the presence and power of the Holy Spirit in Mary’s life would be done also on us. The Holy Spirit is God’s gift to us to enable us to know and experience the indwelling presence of God and the power of his kingdom.

Let’s pray: Lord Jesus Christ, allow us to give our honor to Your Mother Mary by saying: Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of death. Amen.
